Connect VS Code to Bitácora

Add Bitácora as an MCP server in VS Code and use it from the Copilot chat in agent mode to apply your notes.

In VS Code, you use Bitácora from the GitHub Copilot chat in agent mode: it reads your projects and applies your notes to the screens.

In one click

  1. Click Add to VS Code. It's in Bitácora, in the Connect your AI box (VS Code tab) and in First steps › Another tool, and also on the Bitácora connector page, which also has VS Code Insiders.
  2. Confirm the installation.
  3. The first time, VS Code takes you to Bitácora to give permission. Continue in Give permission.

From the command palette

  1. Copy the connector address:

    https://app.bitacora.live/mcp
  1. In VS Code, open the command palette with Ctrl+Shift+P (on Mac, Cmd+Shift+P).
  2. Choose MCP: Add Server, then HTTP, paste the address, and name it bitacora.
  3. When the browser opens, give permission.

These steps are also in Bitácora, under the Add to VS Code button, with your address already filled in.

By hand, in the project

If you'd rather keep it written in your project folder, create .vscode/mcp.json with this:

{
  "servers": {
    "bitacora": { "type": "http", "url": "https://app.bitacora.live/mcp" }
  }
}

Watch out: in VS Code the key is servers, not mcpServers as in Cursor.

Give permission

In the Bitácora window:

  1. In How far it reaches, choose The whole workspace (all projects) or a single project.
  2. In What it can do, leave Read and edit so it can apply your notes, or choose Read only.
  3. Click Give permission.

Check that it works

Open the Copilot chat, switch to agent mode, and ask: Tell me which projects I have in Bitácora. If it answers with your list, you can now ask it to run your notes.

Troubleshooting

  • Copilot doesn't use Bitácora: check that the chat is in agent mode and that bitacora is turned on among its tools.
  • "That request expired": the permission window lasts 15 minutes. Start the server again from VS Code.
  • "Your role in this space does not allow running notes": connecting needs the Can run with AI role.
  • The Copilot agent on github.com: there's no browser there to give permission. Use an access key; the connector page has the example.
